The coverage most rigs carry
Whatever the truck, four coverages come up on almost every policy, and each one answers to someone: your authority, your customers, your lender or your lease.
-
Primary liability insurance
Your authority depends on it: at least $750,000 for most for-hire interstate carriers, and $1 million to $5 million for hazardous materials.
-
Motor truck cargo insurance
Most brokers and shippers want to see it before they give you a load, usually $100,000 or more.
-
Physical damage insurance
Repairs or replaces your rig after a crash, theft, fire or bad weather. Lenders and lessors usually require it.
-
Non-trucking liability insurance
Leased owner-operators usually need it, or bobtail, for the driving the carrier’s policy doesn’t cover. Your lease says which.
Truck insurance questions
Don’t see your question? Call us at (888) 353-2953
Does the type of truck change my insurance price?
Yes. What you haul, what your truck and trailer are worth, how far you run and the risks of the work, like heavy loads, hazardous materials or job-site work, all count, along with your driving record and years in business.
My truck type isn’t listed. Can you still insure it?
Most likely. These are the operations we’re asked about most, and we place coverage for most commercial trucking, including dry vans and reefers. Call us or start a quote and tell us what you run.
What coverage does every truck need?
Liability. Carriers under their own authority carry primary liability at the federal minimum for what they haul, most also carry cargo, and physical damage protects the truck itself. Leased owner-operators add non-trucking liability or bobtail.
